OFTP Not-Going-Back-To-School
homeschoolers' celebrations

In September when the Back-To-School message becomes a reality for schoolchildren, many homeschoolers also return to a different routine than that of summer, while others continue the same learning-through-living that they enjoy all year round. Either way, homeschoolers are not going back to school in the conventional sense.

Many homeschooling families kick off the season with a big gathering to celebrate their educational choice and connect with fellow homeschoolers. So far, for 2007, there are Not-Going-Back-To-School picnics or other types of gatherings planned in the following areas:

In the past there have been events of this type in Hamilton, Honeywood, Kitchener, London, Toronto and Tottenham.

If you are aware of a Not-Back-To-School event that is not listed, please let us know so we can help spread the word! Thanks!

A great way to connect with other homeschoolers in your area!

"We have been homeschooling for 5 years and have two boys aged 12 and 9. One of my challenges is not connecting with other homeschooling families in the area as we are in a rural setting. I'd therefore like to plan a picnic for Tuesday September 18, 2007 in Honeywood,Ontario. While a bit out of the way I live right beside a park with a ball diamond, children's play equipment and parking for cars.

Honeywood is on the map and approximately 45 minutes or less from Barrie, Orangeville, Collingwood, Stayner, Wasaga Beach, Markdale and Alliston.

We will get together around 11:00 with everyone suppling their own picnics. Our family will supply all the fixings for make your own ice cream sundae's. If there is interest we could have a ball game or soccer game following lunch. I would also like to suggest if anyone has any used curriculum etc bring it along for sale or trade. It will probably wrap up around 3:00 or 4:00.

I'm looking forward to meeting new families and sharing ideas and a few good laughs.

Please email me if you are interested, with family numbers and any questions. Looking Forward to Meeting You!

Heather

P.S. We have one dog, two cats and we have nuts (both the eating kind and the people kind!) in the house. We are however respectful of allergies and will do our best to minimize risks."

Not-Back-to-School day - Toronto

Toronto homeschoolers have traditionally held a large not-back-to-school gathering at High Park, but this year several families are planning to spend not-back-to-school day at the Science Centre. Their kids range in age from pre-schoolers to young teens. They have loosely planned out the first couple of hours so others have the best chance of meeting up with them:

10-11 am, outside in the new exploration area out front
11 am, to the lobby to get admission tickets
11am-12 noon, most will head to KidSpark with the younger kids, and the teens will likely head down to level D to the Arcade and Weston Innovation Centre
12noon to 1pm - lunch in the cafeteria

After that, there are no scheduled plans, but if you see a group of kids that look old enough to be in school, chances are good that they're homeschoolers.
